01/15/2024Today we discussing the complicity of writing. Some feel that writing is too complicated. Others feel it is second nature. So why then, the distance between the two? Where is the middle ground? I know for me, I did not just start writing poetry. I actually began just as basic as everyone else, in a diary/journal. It was my thoughts and feelings, which became something later that I used to brainstorm with. I have always loved words. I am someone that will have both a dictionary and a thesaurus on hand at all times. I would take a simple word like "beautiful" and write down all the words that I could use instead.
Moreover, I would randomly open the dictionary and find five words, that I had no idea what they meant or how to use them, but I made myself put them into the writings. Remember, I was not writing poetry yet, I was just writing my thoughts and feelings. I wanted to hide what I wrote in plane site. If anyone was to come and read my journal/diary, I did not want them to know the "words" I was using. I wanted to be incognito. This is how you g from "struggling" to "mastery". But it will not happen over night. We must train and keep our minds sharp. It is one thing to look up the words, but you must know their meanings as well.
If you do not have a journal, I would highly recommend that you get one. It doesn't have to be expensive. Just something cheap and that you can use to keep all your thoughts and feelings for the day/week. This way you can go back and begin your search. I would start with words you use everyday. Such as love, gratitude, hate, awful, worry, excited. Those most people use a lot. Or you can find your own and remember, HAVE FUN!!
I will give you a for instance here -
Take one word you use all the time, and replace it with something new. Mine was "free-spirit", because honestly that is what I am. However, everyone who feels that way uses it. So, I got a new word (which you are more than welcome to use) - "Coddiwomple", means, to travel purposefully toward and as-of-yet unknown destination.
Now that you have a few new words to play around with, evolve the way you write you entries. Practice in your journal. While you are writing for the day/week, use those new words, but use them in ways that would be a little uncommon. If you are feeling a little froggy, you can take two words, create your own word, then define what that means to you. Has to be a unique word, and one that does not exist yet.
“The difference between the almost right word and the right word is really a large matter. ’tis the difference between the lightning bug and the lightning.”
